DJ Premier & Royce Da 5’9 “PRhyme” Cover Art, Tracklist & Album Stream

DJ Premier and Royce Da 5’9 are set to team up for the release of their collaborative album PHRYME.

The album, which is slated to feature Common, Killer Mike, Jay Electronica, Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, Slaughterhouse, Mac Miller and Dwele, is scheduled to be released this year.

“I want people to appreciate the fact that we didn’t compromise in lieu of the environment,” Royce says in an interview with XXL’s Eric Diep. “In order to try to change the way that people digest music, we had to take a leap of faith. The bar has to be high for this album to be another body of work and another chapter for both of our lives.”

Premier is set to sample Adrian Younge on this album, he says.

“I’ve never sampled just one artist,” he says. “I’m known for my reputation and my creativity. I wanted it to be my traditional thing where I sample everything I find, but I am really proud how the project came out and Royce is one hell of a pusher.”

Royce and Premier have worked on several songs together, including “Hip Hop” and “Boom.”

      1. Yeah dude sounds like he’s struck with a perpetual cold or something, but his lyrics have gotten a lot better lately.

      2. Never really been a Mac Miller fan but he isn’t THAT bad. As someone mentioned, he is def not Chief Keef/Soulja Boy (Trindad James, Riff Raff, etc. etc) bad. I think he gets respect for people perhaps for his passion for hiphop. I mean he did get De La Soul & Raekwon on one track together, has worked with Pete Rock, and frequently collabs w/ Statik Selektah. I can at least tolerate him. Additionally, the though of hearing some of the Black Hippy members on a track w/ Royce (and maybe others from SH???) over DJ Premier is def intriguing. Schoolboy Q does not suck. I dont like all of his songs and his rhyme style is an acquired taste but he can make good hiphop. Whoever said they rather AZ, KRS and M.O.P on Premo can go back and listen to their old shit. Those guys are legends and have a special place in hiphop but its 2014 not 1994, get over it!

    1. its about time premo and royce dropping a album i aint feelin mac miller schoolboy q and jay eletronca they could of left them wack ass clowns off they could of gotten some better artists i will be glad when premo drops his album with nas mc ehit nygz lady of rage and krsone if they ever drop tired of hearing oh its coming out yeah when i miss back in the days the golden era when a album was dropping a certain date it was dropping not like this bull shit politics era we live in today the album gets pushed back 50 times then when it finally drops it only got two dope songs and the rest u wanna throw it in the fireplace

    2. maybe this would be dope if it was before the weak slaughterhouse and eminem dickriding movement and how do you sample another hiphop producer? what do wait until he picks the sample and flip it then you take his beat and make beat out of that beat? that shit is lazy as fuck by hip hop standards i know premo has been lazy over the years by accounts from artist that say he so busy but really just be bullshitting cause he thinks he still an industry sought out for sound and probably wants 60 racks a beat but those days are over but it’s great he’s actually producing whole albums again next time pick your own samples from scratch then do what you been doing with a more respectable artist who isnt house nigga white boy lap dog d12 reject i guess he was d13 but how about elzhi, pharohe monch, planet asia,or even gza, O.C.,Kurupt im saying stop waiting nas and look around there pleny of dope real emcees out there

      1. @ WASTE OF OXYGEN^ you must be a dr dre no beat making ass and eminem who now is a pop artist apologist cause everything about that was correct

      2. I ain’t thinking about that pussy ass sh*t you talking about, I came to see the details about the MUSIC, you’re WASTING YOUR BREATH talking that feminine gossip

You clowns talking about dr dre, eminem pop d12 reject, LMMFAO who takes YOU seriously? Sound like a bunch of schoolkids in the lunchroom

      3. This is the “HEY EVERYONE I’M A HIP HOP Post”That comes along anyone related to Eminem in someway has a muthafucca walkin around all day in his pissy pants. Elzhi just did a kickstarter for his next project, so Im sure hes busy, and Royce & Elzhi did their thing. DETROIT HIPHOP shits on 94.2% of anyone, anywhere else. You got these grown ass men, collecting welfare, swiping a bridge card with pride but have all the answers.I would guess putting planet Asia, gza,OC, or Kurupt would sell an extra 3 copies, while puttin together a fresh line of features is a better business plan. I would guess, Pharohe & Eminem havesomething cooking, Last but not least, ALL THIS BULLSHIT “10 years ago Eminem, the dude is better now, than ever, lyrically, and flow, hes doing things MOST rappers cant…but keep posting, because for all the hate, the most commented on Stories on DXm well, they involve Eminem, or those around him..You should go like up for the 10 Million Dollar BONE Cd. Chump. Don’t waste your time replying, I really dont give a fuck what you think

      4. what so when did royce sell a lot of records last i checked he was a bust and had to get in slaughterhouse and stop dissin eminem to get somewhere in music and he still can’t sell units so what the fuck you talking? p.s. but you gave a fuck so you just sonned yourself

      1. Not really. Maybe Eminem of 10 years ago.

I wanna hear AZ, Nas, JERU, Royce, M.O.P before every wanting to hear Eminem with dj premier.

      2. So has Eminem. My point is I would rather hear those emcees then Eminem.

And to the person who mentioned that it is 2014.

Yeah I know that’s why I mentioned those artists.

Because there better then 90percent of today’s new artists.

You go listen to drake lil Wayne and kendrick Lamar and I will listen to JERU the damaja, AZ and Nas.

      3. I would say, that Eminems style has changed and fit better to DJ Premier now! Before they didnt really fit together, so I think it would sound really dope with an Em and premier track!!

But I look forward to hear this album, its gonna be off the hook!!

      4. that wasnt a premier track he didnt make that beat hes just DJing while em spits over a classic break beat but its not a premier beat

    3. I am very excited for this project! Royce has definitely sharpened and honed his rhyming abilities over the last few years and has become one of the most respected emcees in my book. His last album ‘Success Is Certain’ along with the ‘Bad Meets Evil Sequel’ are his best projects to date in my opinion and with DJ Premier producing this entire project I know that this is going to go down as one of the greatest mixtapes ever. The features are amazing as well! I can not wait for the release!

      1. u cant honestly say success is certain was better than street hop

he may have been spitting better (more multis)

but i laughed a legendary and i was a huge royce fan

way before Elliot willson shouted him out on rap radar

“im on raps radar now , elliot wilson

way before u could just end a bar with one word… who the fuck started that??

      2. His first album Rock City is his best album

Every other one wasn’t that good besides death is certain which was pretty good aswell.

The original version of Rock City which is almost impossible to find is still a classic.

      3. Death is certain is his best album followed by rock city and bar exam. Best group album he is on is the 1st slaughterhouse album

      4. fuck yall niggas. its
        street hop
        rock city
        sucess is certain
bar exams dont count they mixtapes. still dope.

    4. im sorta excited about this…..royce has been weak the past several years but he had a couple nice lines here (expendables line in particular) he’s got a bad lisp though take that metal out ur mouth boy ur slurring ur syllables

      1. royce don’t wanna look bad and embarrassed when canibus kills him on the track so he will stay clear away from that

      2. no where is the rass kass feature all that ass kissing and betrayal and he still can’t get on smh i bet eminem won’t let ras shine his shoes its sad to see ras kass go out like that looking for a hand out from shady

      3. that was so stupid and wasn’t even funny like royce freestyles whole albums and not in the studio with a notebook himself smh laaaame

      4. cuz thats whats happening right? ras kass is being blackballed it has nothing to do with a lack of fans….

the last relevant thing ras kass did was get knocked out by the game

      5. @womp womp

Aye dumb ass, Bus FUCKED UP with and without that notebook in a BATTLE against Dizaster but it sounds like your stupid ass didn’t know that.

    5. im going to treat this like the sequel to street hop

success was certain was a huge let down

but that premo track second place was real

      1. this shit is gonna be better then house slippers. mainly cuz of the production and their chmeistry and they already said they aint compromising. meaning no bullshit pop songs for sales.

    6. Really DX we are barely posting this now? But Im glad you posted about Boy George…smh…… the falling off continues

    7. Yeah well maybe it’s good for stuff like this to come out now instead, I think hip hop could really use an injection of old school principles and sounds, way too much shit sounding the same now, everyone following trends. I miss when you didn’t really know what to expect from an album until you heard it once or even a few times to get it all and dissect it. I like music that makes you think and have to catch messages or wordplay.

    8. “If this came out 12 years ago it would have been tight” …if music sounds dope its dope regardless. There’s dope albums that came out 20 years ago that are way doper than albums that are out now.FACT!!!!!Dope hip hop is timeless.

    9. this shit gonna be dope. good music is timeless no matter how old or how new the artists thats makin it are. premo and royce always drop fire. street hop was one of the best royce albums. success is certain is iight too.

      1. music should be dope but 9 tracks seriously? I dont call that an album, so sick of people releasing 30 minute cds and calling them albums, when did that become acceptable? Hate to sound like the bitching fan but i expect more from legends like this, and im not the biggest eminem fan in the world but always wanted to hear him rhyme over an original premier beat not spitting over an old beat and when him and royce get in the studio together they bring out the best of each other

      2. It’s highly likely to get 9 really dope songs. Quality over quantity, but I would also like to have more tracks on this album… It will be dope, so 9 tracks are a good starting point.

      3. \most albums ever recorded are 10-12 songs, ascap & bmi don’t cover beyond that

learn something about the industry before you impose your “opinion” like it should be standard

      4. O really wow i never knew that man thanks for teaching me bro u must be one of those people who knows everyting about “the industry” but youve never done any work in “the industry” thats y all the albums i buy going back to the 90s usually have 15-20 tracks, thats y every gang starr album has at least 17 tracks, and thats what this is going to get compared too but thanks for your expertise

    11. Pro’s: One of the best lyricist in hip hop + one of the best producers in hip hop who can delivery that real hip hop sound.
dropping in a time where there ain’t many who make these real hip hop sound albums with real lyricism. A Slaughterhouse feature, one feature from SH >80% of all dropped albums this YR..
Con’s: Not enough features. The album cover ain’t that great but it’s how the album delivery’s is what I am more interested in than some flash in the pan trying to draw attention without real quality music.

      1. Most of hiphop’s greatest albums have minimal features. There’s too many clusterfuck albums out nowadays with more features than songs.

    12. Royce tries to fit to many words into his bars. It really messes up his follow. He needs to get back on his Bar Exam 2 shit. He’s just so corny nowadays.

      1. Royce dope but you right he really does try squeeze in too many words these days its like he over explaining every line in case we don’t get it

    13. How hard is it to get Eminem to give ya a slowed down old Eminem type flow for this. 16 bars aint asking much from one ya closest friends

      1. you pathetic sick minded loser get off eminem’s dick you can’t even listen to music without him in it you disgusting ass humanoid

    14. He’s one of those MCs that’s just trying too hard to be clever. If it takes you 5 bars to get one metaphor out, then cross that shit out or find a better way to deliver it. These Slaughterhouse niggas are a bunch of one-liner rappers that get ooohs and aaahs from dumb crowds, but there’s no real substance in any of it. It’s like watching a homerun derby or a dunk contest. And why is Premier only sampling Adrian Young? First of all, he’s a contemporary of yours, get off his dick. Secondly, why limit yourself?

    15. “yeah but royce past his prime now” if that’s true its sad. Cos he’s still doper than 90% of these new wack rappers lol and he’s always been so dope and ahead that even if he was past his prime he’s still ahead of most lyrically

    16. Royce da 5’9 is corny . MC Eiht’s new album with DJ PREMIER CALLED WHICH WAY IZ WEST IS GONNA BE DOPE

    17. Wow glad I’m not the only one who realizes how corny Royce is, I’ll check this album out to see if its any good but I’m not a fan of Royce or Slaughterhouse

      1. Shit is legit fire stupido, maybe yeah besides ab-soul, mac miller and Schoolboy Q he could’ve gotten better MC’s but other than that it’s solid

      1. Illmatic was a short album too and it is regarded as possibly the best hip hop album ever. if you want 20 songs and they all aren’t great them the album scores suffer.

    18. i never peeped the tracklist before clicking play on the stream so i was pretty surprised to hear mac miller on this… i aint mad at it though

    20. Straight up this is an album of the year right beside Freddie Gibbs ‘Pinata’, Royce is spitting crazy, this is great.

    21. Best Hip Hop album in 2014 hands down. If you disagree you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT HIP HOP.

      VERY VERY VERY VERY IMPRESSED.

    22. This album is too nice! I can’t seem to find any physical copies for preorder though. Is this a digital only album?

      1. they better hope it has a physical copies or my money is staying in my pocket and im illegally downloading lol foh its the same shit i want the artwork and cd and all that.
